Some dishes succeed because of flavor alone. Others become memorable because of the experience surrounding them. The Campfire Chicken from Cracker Barrel delivers both, pairing a nostalgic cooking technique with a tableside reveal that has helped make it one of the brand’s most beloved seasonal offerings.

Developed around the idea of a classic foil-pack campfire meal, the dish features a marinated half chicken seasoned with Cracker Barrel’s signature Campfire blend, alongside corn on the cob, red potatoes, carrots, grape tomatoes and onions. Everything is finished with an herb butter broth, sealed tightly in a foil pouch and slow-cooked together. The result is a combination of rich, sweet, savory and earthy notes, with the broth transforming into a light, intensely flavored sauce. “I think the success of this dish comes down to something we talk about a lot in culinary development: People don’t just respond to flavor—they respond to the entire experience around a dish. Campfire Chicken delivers on both,” says Jeremy Lett, senior director of innovation and product R&D.

The concept traces its roots to a late-1990s brainstorming session inspired by a childhood scouting memory. “The presentation makes the experience feel memorable and interactive in a way guests genuinely connect with,” says Lett. “Campfire Chicken evokes memories of outdoor cooking, family meals and shared experiences, and that emotional connection is ultimately what keeps guests coming back to the dish year after year.”
